Companions.

One contract.
Many hands.

Firmament 0.1 is a Latin and Cyrillic release. The corpus it serves is also Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, cuneiform, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean. This page sets open companion fonts beside Firmament at reading sizes and measures them against one contract. Nothing is merged or renamed: each face keeps its author and its licence.

One baseline. Six scripts. Each in its own hand.

01 / The contract

What every companion has to meet.

Futura’s geometry does not travel between scripts; its measurements do. These numbers are read from the actual Firmament 0.1 outlines. A companion is harmonious when its own letters land on them.

  • Stem. Within a tenth of 80 ‰ at Regular and 152 ‰ at Bold, measured on the script’s plain vertical.
  • Height. The script’s working letter height sits in the band between x-height and cap height; its ascenders and descenders stay inside Firmament’s line.
  • Colour. Shaped text within a tenth of Firmament’s ink density at the same nominal size and weight.
  • Marks and joins. Points, accents, breathings and cursive joins survive shaping without collisions.
  • Its own forms. A companion keeps the shapes its readers expect. Harmony is a matter of weight, proportion and rhythm, not of borrowed geometry.

Measurement methods and provenance are listed under the surface. Round letters include overshoot, so an o reads about ten units above the x-height line.

02 / Hebrew · עברית

The oldest geometric companion.

Jan Le Witt’s Haim of 1929 is the Hebrew contemporary of Futura: constructed, monolinear, and shaped by the Bauhaus. Its digitisations are commercial, so it serves here as the design reference. The open candidates below are monolinear sans faces proofed against the contract; the pointed line tests mark placement, the plain line tests running prose, and the labels test interface text.

03 / Greek · Ελληνικά

Round, upright, and a year younger than Futura.

Victor Scholderer’s New Hellenic, cut by Monotype in 1927, is a round and nearly monolinear Greek that the Greek Font Society digitised as GFS Neohellenic, with polytonic coverage. It is the closest open relative of Firmament’s spirit, and it runs lighter and smaller than the contract. The lowercase remains cursive-derived in every candidate; a native Firmament Greek is the planned extension.

Wedges are the sign system.

Nothing here is stylised. A wedge reduced to a geometric motif would erase sign distinctions that readers depend on. Harmony with cuneiform is a question of colour, size and leading only, so both faces appear at the sizes the main site uses for interlinear text, next to Firmament transliteration.

A pairing specification, not a typeface.

Chinese, Japanese and Korean are regional families with their own glyph forms, punctuation and rhythm. The deliverable for Firmament is the pairing: which regional font, at which weight and size ratio, against which baseline. These faces are the main site’s current choices and their nearest alternatives; each file below holds only the proof passages.

Fit is the stem divided by the contract stem at the same nominal weight; anything outside 0.9–1.1× is marked. Heights are outline bounds in thousandths of an em.

07 / What this changes

Three layers.
One site.

The main site already reads in three typographic layers: body, display, citation. Companions join the layer they belong to.

Hebrew and Greek citations inside Latin prose stay in the citation layer, beside IBM Plex Serif: Frank Ruhl Libre for Hebrew, GFS Didot for Greek. That is a scholarly register, and it is right.

Running Hebrew prose, headings and interface text are a different job. The Hebrew locale is the only locale on the site with no body and display layering at all; everything renders in the citation serif, or falls to a system font where the display stack has no Hebrew. The recommendation to the main site is to give that locale a monolinear sans companion for its body and display layers and leave the citation layer untouched. Miriam Libre matches the contract on stem and colour and shares its reviver’s source with Frank Ruhl Libre: both descend from Raphael Frank’s Hebrew of the early twentieth century.

Arabic has no web font on the main site at all today. Cairo meets the stem and alef height of the contract and is the proposed interface companion; Naskh remains the candidate for extended reading, subject to review by native readers. Cuneiform and Ugaritic keep their Noto faces. CJK keeps its regional pairings, now written down with their measurements.

None of this replaces the plan to draw Firmament Greek, and later Hebrew and Arabic, as original designs. It gives readers something reliable in the meantime, and it gives the designers a measured target.

08 / Under the surface

How the numbers were made.

Stem
Widest horizontal ink run on the scanline at a fixed fraction of the glyph’s own height, rasterised at 1000 px per em (FreeType via Pillow); probes: Latin l, Hebrew vav, Greek iota, Arabic alef, Han 丨, Hangul ㅣ.
Colour
Filled outline area of the HarfBuzz-shaped sample divided by total advance × em, in ‰ of an em square. Marks count as ink; counters are subtracted.
Heights
Glyph bounding boxes from the outlines, scaled to 1000 units per em. Overshoot is included, so round letters read about ten units above the nominal line.
Faces
Variable fonts are instanced at wght 400 and 700 with fontTools; static families use their Regular and Bold files. Measurements come from the full instanced font; the served WOFF2 files are subsets.
Subsets
Hebrew, Greek and Arabic files keep their whole script blocks plus presentation forms and bidi controls; cuneiform and CJK files contain only the proof passages, so they are not production fonts.
Firmament files
FirmamentSans-Regular.ttf · c2f1828fb227ef48…
FirmamentSans-Bold.ttf · 0153f0882b2ea8bf…
Are these fonts part of Firmament?

No. They are independent open fonts, kept under their own names and licences, served here only to be looked at next to Firmament. The script-block subsets of the Hebrew, Greek and Arabic faces are complete for their scripts; the cuneiform and CJK files contain the proof passages only and must not be reused as production fonts.

Why measure stems and colour rather than compare by eye alone?

Eyes decide; numbers make the decision repeatable. A stem that is ten per cent heavier than Firmament’s reads as a different weight in a mixed line, and a density gap of the same size reads as a different grey. The table lets a reviewer see where each candidate stands before the proofs are examined at size.

How is this reproduced?

Run python scripts/companions.py in the showcase repository with fontTools, Brotli, uharfbuzz and Pillow installed. The script downloads each family from the pinned google/fonts commit (or the pinned Pretendard release), records SHA-256 checksums of the sources and the served subsets, and regenerates both the fonts and the data behind this page.

Read the pipeline ↗
What is still missing?

Native-reader review of every proof at reading size; a Greek candidate that meets the contract, which argues for drawing Firmament Greek; an Arabic reading proof on a full chapter of the Hidden Words; and a vertical CJK proof, which the main site does not yet set.
